The Car Scrappage Scheme
Old cars represent a threat to the environment. Ideally they should be scrapped and replaced by newer and more fuel efficient cars. Which is one of the main reasons for the car scrappage scheme run by the government. When scrapping an eligible car it's possible to get £2,000 off the OTR price of a new one. Whist the idea appears great at first, we at Scrap Car Birmingham have spotted some pitfalls in the government's scheme. For one thing, the scheme dictates to you which new cars you can purchase in exchange for scrapping your old car. Also, the car you are scrapping has to meet the strict guidelines the government has set. The requirements for the scheme are listed below.
The old, scrap car must:
- Be insured when you order your new car
- Be registered with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency or Driver and Vehicle Agency in your name
- Have a current MOT test certificate before date of order for the new vehicle (or within 14 days of expiry at the time of order)
- Have been registered to you continuously for at least a year
- Have an in date (or within 14 days of expiry) tax disc when the order of your new vehicle is placed
- Have been registered in the UK on or before 31st August, 1999
- Be a small van or car weighing no more than 3.5 tonnes
- Have a UK address on the registration certificate (also known as V5C)
So as you can see the guidelines you have to meet to scrap your car under the scrappage scheme are quite extreme. Many people in Birmingham who had hoped to profit from scrapping their car have been disappointed to learn that they did not meet the requirements.
